The
name says it all. Lennie Baker and BlueSoul explores everything
from old school blues artist Elmore James to the smooth soulful
songs of Otis Redding. Lennie, backed by drummer Doyle Speer,
bassist Richard Johnson, guitarist Spencer Wilson and Steve
Bell on the woodwinds, bring tremendous energy, excellent
musicianship and veteran poise to the stage every time they
perform. Between them, they have toured and played with a
wide array of artists. The long list includes B.B. King, the
Temptations, Leon Russell, J.J. Cale, the Tower of Power,
Tanya Tucker, Roy Clark, Glen Campbell and many more.
Lennie
Baker
began performing professionally at the age of 18, having developed
his skills in church and school choirs. He has been entertaining
for nearly 50 years throughout the Southwest. He has also
performed in Hawaii, Cancun, Eureka Springs, Branson, and
many other resort areas.
Lennie
recorded his first record in 1964. The single, "I Still Love
You" was the main song, however, the flip side, "Leaving You"
was just as popular. It took several months to write and perfect
"I Still Love You". Having no experience in recording, Lennie
did not even think of a flip side until a few miles from the
studio. While recording the first song, Lennie wrote the song
"Leaving You".
For
16 years, Lennie performed throughout the five-state area
with the local band "Ronnie and The Miracles", a soul band
with a tremendous following. With the emergence of disco and
DJ's, the band dissolved.
Since
1984 Lennie has worked as a solo act and front man for local
fan favorite "The Gigsters." His repertoire includes a wide
selection of blues, rock and roll, country, and ballads. He
is extremely versatile in the interpretation of different
styles of music. He has a unique gift of appealing to music
lovers of all ages. His favorite music is the 60's, 70's and
80's. However, his repertoire goes back to such songs as St.
Louis Blues, Sunny Side of The Street and other oldies. He
can bring the crowd to their feet when belting out tunes such
as "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", "Every Time I Roll the Dice",
or "Hold On, I'm Coming". He can then easily shift the mood
with a romantic rendition of "When A Man Loves A Woman". His
love for entertaining is quite obvious as he pours his heart,
energy and soul into every song.
Doyle
Speer,
a veteran of the Oklahoma music scene brings his percussion
and vocal skills to the group. He has been performing professionally
since the age of 15. You can find him performing several times
a week with his band Hell or High Water at the Osage Casino
in Bartlesville.
Richard
Johnson,
originally from Southeast Texas was raised by parents that
were professional musicians and educators. His early influences
were from the Big Band and Jazz era such as Count Basie, Les
Brown and Glenn Miller. In addition to Jazz, he soaked up
the flavor of Cajun, Southern Rock and Soulful Delta Blue.
Richard moved to Oklahoma in the late 70's after completing
studies in Jazz and Classical music on upright bass and trombone.
He has spent his professional career working throughout the
country honing his talent and locking in the groove with his
solid bass lines. Working with many national acts with his
company Johnson Lighting & Production, Richard has established
himself as the 'bassman' in demand.
Spencer
Wilson
has been performing professionally since age 14. Spencer has
played lead guitar for The Retro Rockits, The Gigsters, The
Lennie Baker Band, the Robert Barnes Jazz Quartet, the Bruin
Jazz Band and the Yellow House Jazz Combo. He is currently
playing guitar for BlueSoul and the OSU Jazz Band. In addition
to guitar he also plays alto sax for the Second Street Jazz
Band, The JazzTones and the OSU Cowboy Marching Band. He has
performed at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, Bartlesville
Community Center, Hillcrest Country Club, OKMozart, SunFest,
All That Jazz, and many more. Spencer has won several honors
for guitar including being named to the Oklahoma All-State
Jazz Band three times and the Oklahoma Bandmasters All Star
Jazz Band twice. In addition to his guitar honors, he has
earned several awards for clarinet including All-District
five times and in 2010 he was named to the Oklahoma All-State
Band.
Steve
Bell
started playing saxophone at age 9, netting his first professional
gig at 14. During his teenage years Steve performed with Lennie
Baker in Ronnie and the Miracles. He has played in numerous
regional R&B bands through the 70's including The Fabulous
Flippers and Harlem Riot. Later as a union musician in Reno,
Nevada, he played and traveled with Lou Rawls, Captain and
Tennille, The Four Tops and a long list of nationally famous
stars who performed at the casinos in the Reno and Lake Tahoe
area. Besides playing woodwinds for BlueSoul, Steve continues
to perform in other R&B and Jazz projects..
